Featherleg Baboon

The Featherleg Baboon of Cameroon and West Africa is, by broad consensus, the most defensive Old World arboreal in the hobby — the benchmark other 'spicy' species are measured against. Ornately patterned with feather-like leg markings, strictly arboreal (living in hollow trees and dense web tunnels), it is unmatched in speed and near-instant reactivity, with potent venom and no urticating hairs. Breathtaking and formidable in equal measure: an expert-only display animal that showcases the raw intensity of African arboreals.

Temperature77–83°F (25–28°C) — warm humid-forest temperature. Steady room warmth; no heat lamp. It feeds and webs hardest in this band.
HumidityModerate to humid, 50–75%, with strong ventilation — keepers successfully run it anywhere from lightly-damp-with-a-dish to nearly dry-with-a-water-dish, the constant being airflow. Keep a water dish, a lightly moist base, and never trap stagnant humid air. Ventilation over humidity chasing.
Adult sizeA large tarantula: adults reach 5.5–7 inches across the legs (diagonal leg span). A relatively fast grower — expect visible progress between molts when well fed.
LifespanFemales roughly 10–12 years; mature males 2–3 years.

Enclosure

Tall arboreal, at least 8×8×12" for an adult (larger is better), filled with vertical cork and branches — it builds complex web tunnels for shelter and ambush, sometimes partly into the substrate. Height over floor. A secure, front-opening, well-ventilated enclosure is essential; this is the last spider you want reaching over.

Substrate & water

A couple of inches of coco fibre at the base to hold light humidity and let it anchor a ground portion of its tube, beneath abundant vertical cork. Water dish; lightly damp base; ventilate hard. The animal lives in its silk tunnel.

Feeding

An instant, aggressive feeder — it detects prey vibration immediately and strikes from the web mouth. Prey to abdomen size — crickets, roaches, locusts. Juveniles twice weekly, adults weekly. Feed by dropping prey near the retreat; expect a premolt fast.

Temperament & defenses

Expert only. The most defensive OW arboreal most keepers will meet: lightning-fast, near-instant to react, potent venom, no urticating hairs, and unpredictable. It webs a hide it retreats to, which helps maintenance — make your presence known, let it retreat, feed it busy, but never assume it's settled. Never handle. Rehouse only when necessary, with a rigorous, escape-proof plan.

For expert keepers only — we're candid that this is one of the most demanding animals we stock. The reward is a long-lived, spectacular, intensely behavioural display of Africa's fastest arboreal. If you have to ask whether you're ready, you aren't yet. Give it height, ventilation, a vertical retreat, and total respect every single time.
