Orange & Violet
Citharacanthus cyaneus
Citharacanthus (the 'Orange & Violet' and kin) is a genus of medium Central American and Caribbean terrestrials — hardy, colourful burrowers with subtle orange and violet tones, uncommon in the hobby but rewarding. Opportunistic burrowers that appreciate some moisture, they're beginner-friendly, active diggers with mild venom and urticating hairs — a nice, slightly-off-the-beaten-path terrestrial for a keeper wanting something a little different without a difficulty jump.

- Temperature75–82°F (24–28°C) — warm room, no heat lamp. Comfortable in a normal home.
- HumidityModerate, around 65–75%, with a lightly damp lower layer and a water dish. A tropical species that likes some moisture without being wet — damp base, drier surface, good ventilation.
- Adult sizeA small species: adults reach 3–4 inches across the legs (diagonal leg span). A steady grower at a moderate pace.
- LifespanFemales roughly 10–15 years; mature males 3–5 years.
Enclosure
A terrestrial footprint with burrowing depth — floor space over height, substrate deep enough to dig, cork hide, water dish, cross-ventilation. An opportunistic burrower that adopts a hide as it matures.
Substrate & water
4–5 inches of coco/topsoil, lightly damp below and drier on top, with a water dish. It burrows opportunistically. Ventilate the damper base.
Feeding
A steady, willing feeder. Prey to abdomen size; juveniles twice weekly, adults weekly. Remove uneaten prey in 24 hours.
Temperament & defenses
Beginner-friendly: generally docile, an opportunistic burrower that retreats rather than posing, though it'll kick urticating hairs if pushed. Venom mild. Wash up after enclosure work; handle minimally.
Keeper’s notes
An uncommon, hardy terrestrial for a keeper who wants something a bit different without added difficulty — the subtle orange-and-violet tones are attractive, the care is forgiving, and it gives you natural burrowing behaviour. A nice conversation piece off the usual beginner list. Keep the base slightly damp, ventilate, and enjoy.
