Intermediate

Nhandu

Nhandu sp.

Nhandu is a genus of large, fast-growing Brazilian and Paraguayan grassland terrestrials — the Red & White (now Vitalius chromatus), the Black & White (N. coloratovillosus), the Giant Blonde (N. tripepii). Bold, hardy, hungry spiders with vivid patterning and an explosive feeding response, they're skittish and quick to kick hairs — a step up in speed and attitude from the placid Mexican classics, but still New World with mild venom. A great intermediate terrestrial for a keeper wanting size, colour, and a bit more spice.

Enclosure

A large terrestrial footprint, floor space over height, substrate filled to keep falls short. Cork hide, water dish, cross-ventilation, secure lid (they're quick). Adults need real room; they're big, active spiders.

Substrate & water

4–6 inches of coco/topsoil, lightly damp below and drier on top, with a water dish. They burrow when young and roam as adults. Ventilate the damper base.

Feeding

An explosive feeding response and a big appetite — dramatic, fast-growing eaters. Prey to abdomen size; juveniles twice weekly, adults one item weekly. Remove uneaten prey in 24 hours.

Temperament & defenses

Intermediate: bold and defensive, skittish, fast, and quick to flick urticating hairs — noticeably more reactive than a Red Knee. Venom mild. Wash up after enclosure work; not a handling animal given the speed and hair-kicking.

Keeper’s notes

A great confidence-builder for a keeper ready to move past the placid beginners — big, colourful, hungry, and just spicy enough to be exciting without Old World stakes. That feeding response alone is worth the shelf space. Give it room, a slightly-damp floor, a secure lid, and respect the hairs and speed. Hardy and rewarding.
